Über Dylan

Until April 30th, 2024 I was an Austrian Science Fund Senior Fellow (PI), University of Vienna, Department of Philosophy. I have a strong background in phenomenology, aesthetics, and the philosophy of psychopathology. I also have a successful track record of attracting major external funding as project leader (at present over €1 million euros), producing high quality publications, achieving significant research impact, and actively collaborating with people and groups both within and outside of the academy. I am extremely interested in the position at the University of Sussex, as my research background, publication record, and teaching experience would make me an ideal fit.

Each of my research interests is reflected in my doctoral dissertation (University of Sussex, 2009), which concerned the rapport between memory, spatiality, and personal identity. Through a series of original phenomenological studies of subjective experience, the dissertation achieved two principal goals. First, to deepen and enrich our understanding of how the environment not only contribute to a sense of self, but also how places can contest selfhood. Second, to develop a hermeneutical analysis of the ethical role of architecture and aesthetics in its treatment of the past, especially as it figures in monuments and memorials. The dissertation has since been published as a book, The Memory of Place: a Phenomenology of the Uncanny (Athens: Ohio University Press, 2012) and reviewed and cited widely (517 times at present). Following my doctoral work, my intellectual trajectory proceeded in two ways. The first consisted of building upon my phenomenological research on bodily and spatial experience; the second route consisted of conducting scholarly research on phenomenological figures, especially Merleau-Ponty but also Bachelard, Heidegger, and Levinas.

After my doctoral work, I moved to Paris to take up a postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre de Recherche en Epistémologie Appliquée (École Polytechnique) with Dorothée Legrand. This research concerned the phenomenology of agoraphobia, especially in terms of what the condition can tell us about the structure of (inter)subjectivity. My collaboration with Professor Legrand continued through an ongoing collaboration at the Husserl Archives (École Normale Supérieure) where we examined the intersection between phenomenology and psychoanalysis. A co-edited volume based on our joint research, Unconsciousness Between Phenomenology and Psychoanalysis, was published through Springer (2017).

After my work in Paris, I secured an Irish Research Council Fellowship to do research on Merleau-Ponty’s account of the prehistory of the body at University College Dublin (2012-2014). In 2014, I was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship to conduct research on the phenomenology of anxiety in collaboration with Shaun Gallagher (University of Memphis) and Dermot Moran (University College Dublin). For this grant, I received a score of 99.1%, which was the second highest in all of Europe from over 250 applications during the 2013 call. The output of this research is a book published with Bloomsbury, Topophobia: a Phenomenology of Anxiety (2016). Since 2017, I have been based at the University of Vienna first conducting research on shared anxiety in the role of primary investigator and now focusing on the issue of nostalgia. Throughout my time as a researcher, I have co-organized several international conferences, collaborated effectively in interdisciplinary research groups, and co-written several articles with colleagues.

Since finishing my Ph.D., I have been the recipient of nearly 70 invitations to lecture nationally and internationally (including several keynotes) and given conference presentations at many major events within the field of phenomenology. In addition, I have published four books and numerous articles and chapters in peer-reviewed journals such as Continental Philosophy Review, Phenomenology and the Cognitive Science, and Human Studies. Already as a graduate student, I published a book on environmental aesthetics (The Aesthetics of Decay [Peter Lang, 2006]), which has become a central work in the field (cited 318 times). My other books include the aforementioned monograph on memory and place (The Memory of Place: a Phenomenology of the Uncanny [Ohio University Press, 2012] cited 517 times); a work on phenomenology and cinema (The Thing: a Phenomenology of Horror, which has been translated into three languages [Zero Books, 2014]); and a recent book examining the phenomenology of anxiety (Topophobia: a Phenomenology of Anxiety [Bloomsbury, 2016]). In addition to my academic research, I am active in collaborating with artists for a wider public. Recently I have written for Tate, Etc and Etc Media, and collaborated with well-known artists such as Cyprien Gaillard and Gregory Chatonsky, as well as giving interviews to the BBC, the New York Post, France Culture, and the Irish Independent.

Since I began my teaching experience in 2006, I have sought to refine my pedagogical skills both through personal reflection and from student feedback on my teaching. Central to my teaching philosophy are two main guidelines. First, I believe that the teacher must inspire a love of philosophy in his or her students. This aspiration stems from my own introduction to philosophy. I was lucky enough to be taught by professors who cared not only for the material they were teaching but also for its broader relevance. My most valuable memories and experiences during my early years of studying philosophy concern such moments in which a sense of excitement fused with a sense of wonder. In my own teaching, I have sought to recreate these moments through adopting this approach both as a pedagogical resource but also as an approach to philosophy itself. Second, I think that the exchange between student and teacher should be as natural as possible. With this idea, I attempt to establish a rapport with my students that does not depend on a static methodology, but allows for an equal and adaptable relationship, structured by a series of pedagogical themes: communication, listening, research, and meaning.
