Über Nurhanan Kamalia
Hi! I am Nurhanan. I studied to be an English teacher at a university in my beautiful hometown, Malaysia. Since I was a little girl, I have always had a passion for teaching—I remember how I used to ask my little siblings to pretend to be my pupils when we played together. I have meaningful experiences teaching English learners from various age groups. After high school, I used to volunteer to help tutor 11-12 year-old pupils at a former school. And during and after finishing my teaching degree, altogether I have experience in teaching English at two secondary schools (13-17 year-olds). Aside from school students, I have also helped youths in the 20-30s age range to improve their English language skills.
As someone who had entered (and won) many public speaking and debate tournaments in school as well as uni, I also volunteered to coach juniors from my alma maters. I truly believe the process of imparting and sharing of knowledge is something very powerful and that said process is such a beautiful experience in humanity.
My favourite pastimes are reading, writing, watching films, karaoke, meeting friends, and cooking/baking. I am also passionate about discourses surrounding various themes of topics from literature, culture (including pop culture), politics and the environment. I look forward to discussing your topic of interest while we practice English together!

I studied Bachelor’s of Education (TESL) at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia. My undergraduate years wholesomely prepared me to be a teacher who is ready to tackle the core aspects of pedagogy and teaching English learners through various methods, from the traditional ways to the more modern and flexible ones. I believe the integration between methods is a a critical element in creating suitable lessons for learners. While I acknowledge the importance of grammar, I also truly believe that language learning should not be too restrictive and focused on the meta aspect of the language, especially for learners who aim to achieve communication level proficiency. In contrast, it should be incorporated with broader knowledge and contexts to ensure the learning is applied thoroughly into relatable experiences. To ensure this, I always make sure my lessons are planned ahead with tools that present learners to think beyond the classroom walls, eg. using newspaper clippings, music lyrics, or a contemporary poem.
As a person in general, I am very sensitive and empathetic. I am a queer ally and a feminist, so I try my best to organise my lessons to be gender-inclusive and non-discriminatory—a safe and proactive space for everyone! Have a paper or creative essay that needs some assistance? Need to brush up your speaking skills for an oral test? I am ready to help! I look forward to discussing a common goal together!
